‘…To you has been given the secret of the kingdom of God, but for those outside everything is in parables; so that they may indeed see but not perceive, and may indeed hear but not understand…’
1στ. Beyond fear… an almost selfless-love !
Gods, humans, animals and properties are necessary to alleviate the fear man feels. We need-love Gods to buy protection, we need-love friends to feel more secure, we need-love animals to make our daily life easier and we need-love our property that provides us with the necessary goods.
There is, however, a ‘love’ that is almost need-free; the love of the mother or father towards the child. Through this love, parents are ready to sacrifice themselves to save their children. Although one could claim that this may be an implanted instinct to facilitate the survival of the younger and eventually the stronger, this is the only indisputable emotion that surpasses the personal need.
Who has experienced this almost need-free love, present in all mammals, has already pronounced correctly a new word, Love, differently than the widely used fear-based need-love. This feeling cannot be explained by the ‘ego/need’ enslavement game. Somatic pain produces the first emotional response, fear, enslaving the ego. But this almost selfless Love of the parents to their offsprings transcends the fear and ignores the pain. This is, therefore, a distinct emotional response that has not its source in the ego-body-cosmos interaction, but in the inner substance of the ego (the soul). This fact is the indisputable evidence that the animal consciousness can also feel things that do not come from its interaction with the body and the outside world but from the very texture of the ego [1].
Defying the threats from the lord of the world, ego through consciousness discovers that its substance (soul) has a unique quality to choose disobedience and contest the omnipotence of the slavery of needs. This is free will. The ego has the quality to chose freely to spit to the face of the lord of the world, by choosing the penalty of pain and death of the body. The perception of this almost need-free love is the key to conceive subsequently a new subword of ‘love’ that expands the Love for our children to the LOVE for all that exists [2].
[1] A prominent symbol of the 18th degree of freemasonry is the she-pelican feeding her young with her blood. It is believed that pelican, an ancient Christian symbol mentioned in the vision of St. Gertrude, refers to Christ that feeds men with his blood offering the man’s resurrection.
[2] ‘Descending into the depth of our consciousness’ – step 4: Through consciousness ego conceives ‘love’ as an emotion that identifies what ego needs in order to feel less fear and pain. In any case, what we love is expendable for it serves only our needs. There is, however, something that is not expendable for us, but in contrast, we freely decide to become expendable for its sake. These are our children and, through them, consciousness realizes the emotion ‘Love’ (almost need-free) and, most importantly, an alternative way to fight back the cosmic evil: the self-sacrifice. Going deeper, egowill subsequently feel the pure need-free ‘LOVE’.
