‘…To you has been given the secret of the kingdom of God, but for those outside everything is in parables; so that they may indeed see but not perceive, and may indeed hear but not understand…’

1ζ. The genesis of law and of social ethics

Apart from the parent-children situation, however, humans are too weak to defy the lord of the world [1]. In fact, under the smashing power of fear, it is perfectly ethical for an intelligent being to protect himself, and all that serve his needs-loves, against the threat even by committing the most repulsive crimes. The action of defense is not different to any hostile action against other defending beings, even if greed is the motive, as by doing so the longest pain-free period is secured.  This is the primordial ethical law.

The organization of humans in families is a result of the basic need-love emotion and the evident advantage of the group to survive and live better than an individual.  But the individuals of a family have personal needs and according to the primordial ethical law a member of a family can turn against another member to relieve his pain. The concept of the family and the important benefits gained from such a structure demands the restriction of the primordial ethical law by a bunch of rules that grade the needs of the individual, while placing the needs of the family above the individual ones. The family as a structure has now the right to apply the primordial law against its own members in order to protect itself from inner threats. The individuals are enforced to accept some pain in order to benefit the protection and support of the family, thus avoiding the major burden of being alone.

This is the genesis of the social ethical laws, a system of rules that regulate the social behavior, so as to protect its individuals against their right to practice the primordial ethical law. The primordial law, however, remained the basic ethical rule that governed the behavior between societies.  You must respect your father, you must not take the wife of you neighbor, you must not lie to harm the members of your society but, you are encouraged to do any crime against other societies if by doing so you benefit yours.  Such an ethical system expiates all crimes performed by the Hebrew and Egyptians or the Greeks and the Persians during their epic wars, we read even in these days with admiration, although we fail to realize and understand the magnitude of the massacres performed [2].

[1] The power of the lord of the world and the difficulty to refrain from acting evil under the fear he creates, is evident in the pray Christ gave to his believers, begging God to keep away men from situations where the fear of suffering leads us to harm the others: “…forgive us our sins, for we ourselves forgive every one who is indebted to us; and lead us not into temptation…"

[2] “…Utilizing stones, timber, dirt and debris from the mainland, Alexander constructed a causeway out into the Mediterranean. At last he reached the island, breached the city wall and slew or put into slavery the defiant Tyrians. An amazing feat, Tyre was changed forever...”  www.biblearchaeology.org
